If you choose to have your vision corrected by laser, the procedure will be performed by an experienced ophthalmologist using the LASIK method: First, an automatic "microkeratome" lifts a very thin layer of the cornea. This "flap" is opened to the side, like a book cover. Now the laser begins its work. It removes microscopic parts of the cornea, reducing its refractive power in order to correct myopia, and increasing it to correct farsightedness. The corneal flap is then replaced. It adheres to its original position and closes over the wound, a natural, transparent bandage.

The amount of the cornea to be removed by laser is calculated by computers according to preliminary analysis of the eye. This analysis also takes into account the smallest irregularities (aberrations) of each individual eye, and calculates the laser’s exact path. Experts tearm this “wave-front guided laser ablation." The laser treatment itself is very fast. The high-speed laser requires only a few seconds to do its work.

The LASIK surgery leaves no open wound on the cornea. The fine cut heals very quickly. In general, therefore, both eyes can be operated on the same day. For you as a patient, this is painless; at most, some patients may experience a slight irritation. Even a day after surgery, your life can go back to normal.

LASIK makes no use of dangerous high-energy lasers. The excimer laser used in this eye operation is an extremely fine light beam. It only models the surface of the cornea, and does not penetrate into the eye.
